From October 14 to 16, 2024, a three-day workshop was convened to enhance 15 selected SMEs’ awareness of the African market and the complexities of international trade. Participants, including representatives from three SMEs based in Seychelles, benefitted from discussions on logistics, compliance with international trade standards, and effective brand positioning in the global marketplace. Additionally, insights were provided regarding trade agreements by prominent institutions including the MCCI and the Mauritius Revenue Authority. The event fostered a dialogue between industry experts and SME representatives, allowing them to address their concerns regarding exporting under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) framework. During the event, Mr. Patrice Marie, Vice-President of the MCCI, emphasized the significant role of SMEs in the Mauritian economy, noting that they contribute nearly 40% of the GDP and account for 55% of employment. He remarked, “There are nearly 120,000 SMEs actively engaged in various sectors across Mauritius with evident potential for expansion into international markets. The export of services from Mauritius to the African continent is experiencing rapid growth in banking, medical, commercial, and other sectors. With the momentum generated by the African Continental Free Trade Area, we view the African continent as a highly promising region for service sectors.” Ms. Amanda Serumaga, the UNDP Resident Representative for Mauritius and Seychelles, underscored Africa’s potential for boosting entrepreneurship and trade. She stated, “Africa, with its rich tapestry of cultures, resources, and innovative spirit, is swiftly emerging as a global hub for entrepreneurship, driving innovation and shaping markets. Yet, many entrepreneurs still face significant barriers when it comes to exporting their goods and services. To fully unlock the vast potential that African entrepreneurs possess, we must commit ourselves to the relentless pursuit of capacity building—an endeavour central to the mission of the UNDP.” The Xport Accelerator Programme is designed to be a catalyst for Mauritian SMEs desiring to tap into the African market by equipping them with essential knowledge and facilitating interaction with industry professionals.
