ECN Initiates Training for Polling Officers Ahead of Namibian Elections

The ECN has begun training 63 polling officers in northern Namibia for the upcoming elections, with over 16,000 recruited nationwide. The deputy director emphasized the need for error-free execution during voting, while special voting is scheduled for 13 November for certain groups. With 4,675 polling stations planned, officials are urged to maintain high standards and integrity.

The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) has initiated the training of 63 polling officers to be deployed in the northern regions of Oshana, Ohangwena, Oshikoto, and Omusati. This training commenced last week as part of the preparation for the presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled for 27 November. Nationwide, the ECN has enlisted over 16,000 polling officers to ensure a smooth electoral process. Thomas Shapi, the ECN’s deputy director of administration, emphasized the importance of comprehensive training to minimize errors that could disrupt the voting process. In his remarks at the training session, Shapi highlighted the necessity for polling officials to be prepared mentally, emotionally, and physically, stating, “Avoid committing errors because we are being monitored all over the world and committing one small mistake can easily lead to chaos and disrupt the whole voting process.” Special voting will occur on 13 November for seagoing personnel, registered voters in the diaspora, and security members on duty during the main election. A total of approximately 4,675 polling stations will be established across Namibia to facilitate voting for all registered constituents. Amon Haimbangu, the regional electoral officer for Oshana, urged the polling officials to respect the training process and adhere to high standards. He stressed that the opportunity to serve as a polling officer should be seen as a significant responsibility rather than merely a job with compensation. Haimbangu asserted, “We want to deliver our mandate, the nation’s eyes are on us now,” emphasizing the need for integrity and transparency throughout the electoral process.

The training of polling officers is a critical component of the electoral process in Namibia, ensuring that individuals responsible for facilitating voting are adequately prepared. The ECN’s proactive approach highlights its commitment to a smooth election cycle amidst the larger democratic framework of the country. With a planned voting day of 27 November, the importance of error-free operations has prompted specialized training, aiming to align all officers with international electoral standards and practices.

In summary, the ECN’s training initiative for polling officers is designed to prepare them thoroughly ahead of the crucial elections on 27 November. With a focus on minimizing errors and maintaining integrity, the commission is working to uphold public trust and ensure a transparent electoral process. The proactive measures, including special voting provisions, reflect the ECN’s dedication to a successful election outcome.
