Empowering Women Journalists in Climate Change Reporting Across Africa

The African Climate Policy Centre, in collaboration with ECA and PACJA, is offering a two-week training course for women journalists in Africa to enhance their reporting skills on climate change. This initiative aims to provide participants with critical knowledge in climate science, governance, and investigation techniques, enabling them to effectively communicate climate issues. Applications are being accepted via the IDEP online platform.

The African Climate Policy Centre (ACPC), in partnership with various stakeholders, has been a leader in enhancing climate change awareness and expertise across the African continent. Notably, in 2016, ACPC organized a training session aimed at integrating Climate Information and Services (CIS) into legislative frameworks and development policies. This initiative was complemented by the creation of an online self-paced learning module in collaboration with the UNCC: Learn Partnership. With over 6,000 participants globally, this module played a critical role in training civil society and other key groups on climate information services throughout several African nations. Recognizing the essential role of the media in disseminating knowledge about climate change, the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), in partnership with the Pan-African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA), is seeking applications from women media practitioners in Africa for a two-week training course. This program aims to enhance the capabilities of female climate change reporters across the continent. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of climate science, the intricacies of global climate governance, and gender perspectives relating to climate issues. They will learn to collaborate across borders, conduct investigative journalism focused on climate topics, and effectively map stakeholders to optimize message dissemination. Moreover, the coursework will cover modern reporting tools and techniques to foster impactful storytelling about climate change. The training structure is interactive, featuring self-paced lessons enriched with reading materials and discussions, ensuring that female journalists of diverse backgrounds can participate and thrive. The course is inclusive, welcoming women journalists from all media platforms and ages. Applications are being accepted until the registration deadline on a rolling basis through the IDEP online application platform, allowing interested participants to secure their spots efficiently. The African Climate Policy Centre (ACPC) has spearheaded initiatives aimed at equipping individuals and organizations with tools and knowledge to tackle climate change across Africa. Training sessions such as the one held in 2016 have been pivotal in shaping climate policies by integrating climate-related data into developmental strategies, while collaborations like those with UNCC: Learn ensure a broader reach of climate information education. Such efforts underscore the urgent need to enhance media engagement in climate discourse, especially among women journalists who can amplify the voices addressing climate issues.

In conclusion, the ECA and PACJA’s initiative to train women journalists represents a significant step towards strengthening climate change reporting in Africa. This course aims to equip participants with essential skills and knowledge, fostering a community of informed reporters who can effectively communicate the complexities of climate change. By empowering women in media, this training not only supports gender equality but also enhances the quality of climate-related journalism across the continent.
