Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Peru’s President Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra have aligned their views on enhancing the effectiveness of multilateral institutions. They committed to considering each other’s candidacies for regional and international organizations to foster cooperation. Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the bilateral relationship that was established on April 24, 1986. In a joint statement, Peru acknowledged Malaysia’s support for its designation as a “Development Partner of ASEAN” and emphasized its intention to enhance cooperation with ASEAN member countries in diverse areas of mutual interest. Additionally, Anwar and Dina Ercilia reaffirmed their dedication to collaborative initiatives within the ASEAN-Peru Development Partnership Committee and agreed to bolster inter-regional ties between the Pacific Alliance and ASEAN, following recommendations from the recent 7th ASEAN-Pacific Alliance Ministerial Meeting. Peru praised Malaysia’s upcoming chairmanship of ASEAN in 2025 and its goals for inclusivity and sustainability in accordance with the ASEAN Community Vision 2045. Moreover, both leaders recognized the importance of addressing the Palestinian issue, advocating for a permanent political resolution and an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, along with unimpeded humanitarian assistance. Anwar’s visit, during which he is set to attend the 31st APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting from November 14 to 16, aims to fortify bilateral relations, marking his inaugural official visit to Peru and to the Latin American and Caribbean region as Malaysia’s Prime Minister. Peru, located in western South America and sharing borders with Ecuador and Colombia as well as Brazil, presents a significant platform for regional collaboration. Lima, the capital city with a population exceeding 11 million, hosts APEC meetings for the third time since 2008 and 2016.
