The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has established a specialized taskforce to probe the findings of a recent audit concerning Walesi PTE LTD. This development follows the receipt of the audit report from Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica. It was revealed in a parliamentary session that the Government allocated a total of $123.6 million for the Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) Project, which pertains to Walesi’s operations, between the years 2015 and 2022. Commissioner Barbara Malimali emphasized the significance of this investigation, classifying it as a matter of national interest. Alifereti Wakanivesi, Assistant Manager of the Economic Crimes Unit, has been appointed to lead the investigation, commencing immediately.

The investigation into Walesi by FICAC arises from a recent audit that scrutinizes significant government expenditures on the Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) Project. This project, crucial for enhancing digital broadcasting in Fiji, has generated concern regarding the substantial funds disbursed over several years. With $123.6 million channeled into Walesi’s operations, the scrutiny aims to ensure that the resources have been appropriately utilized and to address any potential discrepancies or corrupt practices.

The initiation of this investigation by FICAC underscores the seriousness with which national financial matters are treated. The substantial funds involved necessitate a thorough examination to uphold transparency and accountability within government projects. The findings of the taskforce could lead to important insights regarding the management of public resources and reinforce the integrity of governmental operations.
