Urgent Call for Lebanon to Reject Extradition of Poet Abdul Rahman Al-Qaradawi

Amnesty International calls upon Lebanon to deny extradition requests for Abdul Rahman Al-Qaradawi, an Egyptian-Turkish poet detained after criticizing the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. The extradition could expose him to severe human rights abuses. His case underscores the importance of Lebanon’s commitment to human rights and freedom of expression amid regional pressures.

Amnesty International has urged Lebanese authorities to deny extradition requests for Abdul Rahman Al-Qaradawi from Egypt and the UAE, following his arbitrary detention upon re-entering Lebanon from Syria. Sara Hashash, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa, stated that Al-Qaradawi fell victim to these requests due to his outspoken criticism of these governments, thereby exercising his right to free expression. Hashash emphasized that returning him to either country would expose him to severe human rights abuses, including potential torture and enforced disappearance, violating international legal principles.

Al-Qaradawi, now detained, previously filmed a social media segment remarking on the UAE, Saudi Arabian, and Egyptian authorities while visiting Damascus in December 2024. This led to his arrest on December 28 at the Lebanese-Syrian border after authorities applied a 2017 Egyptian verdict against him, which was deemed politically motivated. His representatives have sought intervention from UN Special Procedures to impede the extradition requests, citing his precarious situation due to the familial persecution faced by his family members in Egypt.

As discussions regarding his extradition progress, the Lebanese authorities face a significant test regarding their commitment to uphold human rights and freedom of expression. The importance of this case extends beyond Al-Qaradawi, reflecting on Lebanon’s collective obligation to prioritize international law over geopolitical affiliations and pressures. It is critical that Lebanon reaffirms its support for human rights by rejecting the extradition requests and ensuring Al-Qaradawi’s release to a location where he may freely express his views without fear of threat or punishment.

The situation surrounding Abdul Rahman Al-Qaradawi highlights broader issues of freedom of expression and human rights within the Middle East. Al-Qaradawi, a dual Egyptian-Turkish national, has faced persecution for his criticisms of regional authorities. His detention stems not only from these critiques but also from a politically charged legal case in Egypt, which many observers view as an attempt to silence dissent. With Lebanon now pondering his extradition, this case symbolizes a crucial intersection of human rights advocacy, international law, and regional political dynamics. The Lebanese government’s decision will likely set a precedent regarding its commitment to protecting individual rights and freedoms within its jurisdiction.

The case of Abdul Rahman Al-Qaradawi serves as a significant indicator of Lebanon’s adherence to international human rights standards. As the Lebanese government confronts extradition requests from Egypt and the UAE, it faces a pivotal moment in demonstrating its commitment to the principles of freedom of expression and protection against persecution. By rejecting these extradition demands, releasing Al-Qaradawi, and allowing him safe passage to a country of his choice, Lebanon would affirm its position as a defender of human rights in a region where such rights are often threatened.
