The army’s allegations include claims that the UAE is arming the paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which have been deemed credible by U.N. experts and U.S. lawmakers, though the UAE firmly denies any wrongdoing.
The ongoing conflict in Sudan has resulted in a severe humanitarian crisis, described as the largest in the world, with over 12 million people displaced and half of the population facing hunger. The UAE official emphasized the need for a humanitarian ceasefire, particularly as the holy month of Ramadan approaches, a time traditionally associated with mercy and compassion.
In response, the Sudanese army, through a high-ranking official, stated that it could not accept a ceasefire during Ramadan unless the siege on besieged cities and areas is lifted. The RSF is currently engaged in a military offensive against the city of al-Fashir, which is the army’s last holdout in the Darfur region, while the army continues to gain ground in Khartoum.
In addition to advocating for a ceasefire, the UAE intends to host a summit in Addis Ababa on Friday, in collaboration with the African Union, to seek financial assistance for humanitarian efforts in Sudan. The UAE has committed to announcing $200 million in funding during this summit.
The Sudanese government has dismissed the proposed summit as a “crime and aggression” against Sudan, citing the UAE’s alleged role in the ongoing conflict. Malik Agar, a deputy on Sudan’s Sovereign Council, criticized what he viewed as the army’s attempts to misrepresent the UAE’s involvement. In defense, the UAE official stated that such allegations would not deter its goal of fostering regional stability.
