Hezbollah’s senior member criticized the Lebanese government’s actions regarding a ban on Iranian planes at Beirut Airport. Ghaleb Abu Zeinab emphasized the importance of preserving good ties with Iran and called for balanced relations amidst protests against the government’s decision. The situation is further complicated by Israeli threats against Iranian flights.
A senior official from Hezbollah has criticized the Lebanese government’s response to a recent incident at Beirut’s Rafic Hariri International Airport. Ghaleb Abu Zeinab, a member of Hezbollah’s Politburo, asserted that maintaining equitable relations with Iran is vital for Lebanon. His remarks came after the government imposed a temporary ban on Iranian planes amid protests arising from this decision.
Abu Zeinab stated, “The Lebanese government’s stance on what happened at the airport in Beirut… was not correct and promising.” He emphasized the necessity for Lebanon to enhance its relationship with Iran, calling on Prime Minister Nawaf Salam to seek a balanced approach with both Iran and the United States, urging the government to resist US pressures.
Following the temporary flight suspension, demonstrators blocked access to the airport and set tires ablaze, voicing their dissent over the government’s measures. The civil aviation authorities mentioned they are taking additional security precautions, affecting flights from Iran until February 18.
After the protests, Lebanon arranged for its national airline, Middle East Airlines, to repatriate stranded Lebanese passengers from Iran. However, Iranian authorities prevented Lebanese aircraft from landing, complicating the situation.
Iran’s Ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani, indicated ongoing efforts to restore direct flights between Lebanon and Iran. He noted that Iran was open to allowing Middle East Airlines to conduct evacuation flights provided that Lebanon does not obstruct Iranian flights. Amid these developments, Israel has issued threats against Iranian aircraft, further complicating the regional aviation landscape.
In summary, Hezbollah’s leadership underscored the importance of maintaining fair relations with Iran amid heightened tensions involving Lebanon, Iran, and external influences. The government’s handling of the airport crisis has prompted protests, and diplomatic efforts to resolve flight issues are ongoing. The situation reflects broader regional dynamics affecting Lebanon’s sovereignty and international relations.
