The 5+5 Joint Military Commission has warned against the proliferation of hate speech in Libya, condemning actions that threaten national unity. The United Nations Support Mission in Libya organized a seminar addressing the impacts of hate speech on the ceasefire agreement and Libya’s social fabric, urging accountability and efforts to reduce societal divisions.
The 5+5 Joint Military Commission (JMC) has issued a caution regarding the rising tide of hate speech in Libya. In a statement released on Tuesday, the JMC condemned actions that provoke national fragmentation and threaten the social fabric, highlighting the potential for escalating discord between different cities and regions.
The JMC emphasized the importance of prioritizing national interests, urging all officials, security agencies, and political leaders to hold accountable those perpetrating divisive acts. The call aims to protect Libyan unity from individuals seeking to deepen societal divides.
In conjunction with these concerns, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) convened a seminar involving the 5+5 JMC to discuss the threats posed by hate speech. This event investigated the pervasive nature of hate speech, disinformation, and incitement as propagated through traditional and social media channels.
UNSMIL recognized the detrimental effects of hate speech on both the ceasefire agreement’s stability and Libya’s overall social cohesion. The discussions included strategies to combat the spread of hate speech, referring to Article 5 of the ceasefire agreement established in October 2020.
UNSMIL underscored the imperative to curtail all forms of incitement in media and social platforms, urging community leaders and local authorities to enhance efforts aimed at alleviating tensions and addressing the underlying causes of escalating discord.
The 5+5 Joint Military Commission and the United Nations Support Mission in Libya are collectively working to combat the alarming rise of hate speech in the country. Both bodies stress the urgent need for accountability among those responsible for inciting discord, emphasizing the critical importance of maintaining national unity and social stability.
