Ms. Wosornu highlighted the severe consequences of nearly two years of conflict, with over half of Sudan’s population—approximately 24.6 million people—facing acute hunger. Furthermore, more than 12 million people are displaced, including 3.4 million fleeing to neighboring countries, while health services have nearly collapsed and countless children remain out of school amid rampant sexual violence.
She particularly addressed the troubling developments in North Darfur and Khartoum, reporting continued civilian attacks despite the Security Council’s Resolution 2739 (2024), which had demanded an end to the RSF’s siege of El Fasher. In Zamzam displacement camp, fighting has intensified, leading to famine conditions and casualties, including humanitarian workers who have been killed.
The civilian populace continues to suffer from intense fighting in Khartoum, where summary executions have been reported. Ms. Wosornu expressed concern about the risks local responders and community volunteers face in areas experiencing violence. She noted that fighting is expanding to new regions in southern Sudan, further complicating humanitarian efforts.
Last week, the humanitarian response plans for Sudan and the region were launched, calling for $6 billion to assist nearly 25 million people in Sudan and up to 5 million refugees in neighboring countries. Ms. Wosornu pressed the Security Council and the international community to take decisive actions to address the escalating crisis.
In her concluding remarks, she made three essential requests: immediate action to ensure compliance with international humanitarian law; genuine efforts to facilitate humanitarian access to those in need; and mobilization of substantial international funding to meet unprecedented humanitarian needs in Sudan.
