Mexican PRI Supports Morocco’s Sovereignty Over Western Sahara

The Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) of Mexico has declared its support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, signaling a shift in its historical position. This was reinforced during a meeting between PRI President Alejandro Moreno and Moroccan officials. The establishment of the Mexican Observatory for Moroccan Sahara further supports this new diplomatic approach.

Moroccan diplomacy continues to strengthen ties with Latin America, as evidenced by the growing support for its sovereignty over Western Sahara from Mexico. The Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), a key political entity in Mexico, has officially declared its backing for Morocco’s territorial claims. This endorsement was announced by PRI President Alejandro Moreno, who emphasized a renewed commitment to international relations and solidarity with Morocco.

This significant decision marks a departure from PRI’s historical stance, having recognized the Polisario Front during its leadership in 1979. Moreno expressed this change during a meeting with Rachid Talbi Alami, the President of Morocco’s House of Representatives, who visited Mexico City with a delegation of parliamentary leaders. This meeting underscored the evolving context of international relations.

The PRI’s support reflects its recognition of a “constantly transforming multipolar world,” as stated by Moreno, who highlighted the party’s intention to champion Mexico’s interests while embracing a fresh global strategy. Emphasis was placed on the principles of non-intervention and peaceful conflict resolution.

Deputy Marcela Guerra also advocated for enhanced relations between Morocco and Mexico during discussions at the Mexican Chamber of Deputies. She noted the importance of both nations as strategic gateways to Africa and the Americas, highlighting their roles in fostering international stability and cooperation over the past 60 years.

On January 20, the Mexican Observatory for Moroccan Sahara was established in Mexico City, aimed at advocating for Morocco’s territorial integrity in Latin America. The observatory’s president remarked that it will facilitate the promotion of bilateral relations, coinciding with growing support for Morocco’s autonomy plan on the global stage.

The recent endorsement from Mexico’s PRI marks a significant shift in support for Morocco’s claims over Western Sahara. This development underscores the evolving diplomatic relations between Morocco and Latin America, with a focus on promoting stability and cooperation. The establishment of the Mexican Observatory for Moroccan Sahara further signals a commitment to advocating for Morocco’s territorial integrity in the region.
