Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani met with Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh to discuss cooperation and regional matters, focusing on Libya’s stability and unity. The dialogue included Qatar’s support for the political process in Libya amidst ongoing efforts to hold elections to resolve the crisis between rival governments, following the ousting of Gaddafi in 2011.
On Tuesday in Doha, Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani engaged in discussions with Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh. Their talks centered on enhancing bilateral cooperation and addressing regional developments, particularly the ongoing situations in Gaza and Syria, according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry, as reported by News.Az and Anadolu.
Sheikh Mohammed affirmed Qatar’s unwavering commitment to Libya’s unity and the aspirations of its people for stability and development. He emphasized Qatar’s backing of the Libyan political process, adherence to relevant UN Security Council resolutions, and the pursuit of peaceful solutions that uphold Libya’s sovereignty.
Efforts both by the UN and local entities are focused on facilitating elections in Libya to mitigate tensions between rival administrations. The Government of National Unity, led by Dbeibeh in Tripoli, is recognized by the UN, while the opposing government, appointed by the House of Representatives in 2022 and led by Osama Hamad, operates from Benghazi, managing the eastern and southern regions.
There is optimism among Libyans that the anticipated elections will ultimately resolve the ongoing political and armed conflicts, thereby concluding the prolonged transitional phases that have emerged since the downfall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011.
The dialogue between the Qatari and Libyan leaders underscores a commitment to bilateral cooperation and regional stability. Qatar’s support for Libya’s political integrity and the quest for peaceful solutions is pivotal as the country navigates its complex political landscape in anticipation of forthcoming elections that could alter its trajectory. The international focus remains on facilitating a unified political process in Libya to ensure a peaceful resolution of its ongoing conflicts.
