Chad’s Ruling Party Secures Dominance in First Senate Election

Chad’s ruling party, the Patriotic Salvation Movement (MPS), won 45 out of 46 Senate seats in the country’s first Senate election, reinforcing President Mahamat Idriss Deby’s control over the nation. The election results are contested by an opposition party, which claims irregularities. The political landscape in Chad continues to evolve with significant implications for international defense relations and governance.

In the recent Senate elections in Chad, the ruling Patriotic Salvation Movement (MPS) secured 45 out of the 46 available seats, with the results indicating a consolidation of President Mahamat Idriss Deby’s influence. This election marks a pivotal moment for Chad, as it is the first Senate election since the establishment of the Senate.

President Deby ascended to power in 2021 following the death of his father and predecessor, Idriss Deby Itno. In May, he attained 61% of votes during a contentious presidential election, which faced accusations of electoral fraud from the opposing candidates.

The MPS gained a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly following a legislative election in December that was boycotted by many opposition parties. Official results show that only one seat was won by the National Rally of Chadian Democrats (RNDT) party, led by former Prime Minister Albert Pahimi Padacke.

The recent Senate elections in Chad underscore the continued political dominance of President Mahamat Idriss Deby and his party, the MPS. With significant control over both legislative bodies and the impending appointment of additional senators by the President, Deby’s administration appears to be solidifying its grip on power amidst rising tensions in defense relations with France and a developing closer alignment with Russia.
