A high-level delegation from the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) visited Abuja, Nigeria, on February 27-28, 2025, to reinforce commitments from government and traditional leaders to eradicate type 2 variant poliovirus. The delegation, including key figures such as Dr. Chris Elias, Chair of the Polio Oversight Board, aimed to assess progress and address challenges like insecurity and public mistrust regarding vaccinations.
During the visit, discussions emphasized the necessity for strengthened leadership and accountability in Nigeria’s efforts against polio transmission. The delegation consulted with government officials, including Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, who reiterated the importance of sustained national dedication to polio eradication.
The delegation met with traditional leaders, including representatives of the Sultan of Sokoto, who reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to immunization initiatives. They consulted with specialists from the National Primary Health Care Development Agency and examined the current state of poliovirus transmission statistics, focusing on recommendations from the Expert Review Committee on enhancing vaccination strategies.
The Expert Review Committee had previously recommended enhanced political engagement and surveillance for effective vaccine dissemination, as well as improving logistics and promoting routine immunization to address misinformation. As of February 15, 2025, Nigeria had identified 94 polio-affected children across 15 states in 2024, although no cases had been detected in 2025 thus far.
The delegation underscored the urgent need for collaborative efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s polio eradication program and routine immunization systems. By intensifying the response against polio outbreaks, the leaders expressed hope for progress in protecting all children against the disease. Significant coordination among governmental and non-governmental stakeholders was deemed critical for success.
The GPEI delegation’s visit to Nigeria highlights the need for committed efforts to eradicate the type 2 variant poliovirus through collaborative leadership and targeted immunization strategies. Addressing misinformation and bolstering routine immunization systems are vital to curbing transmission.
