Pakistan has reaffirmed its commitment to combat terrorism through various dialogues with the United Kingdom, European Union, and Japan, according to a statement from the Foreign Office. The country’s counter-terrorism strategy, primarily driven by the National Action Plan (NAP) and the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) of 1997, aims to obliterate terrorist networks, regulate madrassas, and prevent the financing of extremism.
To advance its counter-terrorism efforts, Pakistan has established the National Counter-Terrorism Authority (NACTA) to enhance coordination among intelligence and law enforcement agencies. Significant military operations, such as Zarb-e-Azb and Radd-ul-Fasaad, have been directed at dismantling militant strongholds. Nevertheless, Pakistan faces ongoing challenges in countering extremist ideologies and pursuing long-term de-radicalization amid changing security dynamics.
During a recent press briefing, Foreign Office spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan announced that the second round of the Pakistan-United Kingdom Counter-Terrorism Dialogue occurred on February 17-18, focusing on threats from terrorist entities and the situation in Afghanistan. Furthermore, on February 20, the ninth Counter-Terrorism Dialogue with the EU was conducted in Brussels, highlighting cooperation on security issues.
Additionally, the spokesperson reported that the fourth round of Counter-Terrorism Consultations with Japan took place in Tokyo on February 26, where discussions covered evolving terrorist threats at both national and regional levels. Khan emphasized both nations’ resolve to combat terrorism comprehensively.
Moreover, Khan remarked on the visit of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who was in Pakistan for his first official visit, accompanied by a high-level delegation. This visit culminated in the signing of five Memorandums of Understanding in diverse sectors including banking and infrastructure development.
Pakistan is intensifying its counter-terrorism initiatives through international dialogues and established frameworks. While it has made significant strides in addressing terrorism, ongoing ideological challenges and regional dynamics remain critical concerns.
