In a significant move, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) of Nigeria has approved the establishment of 11 new private universities throughout the nation. Additionally, the FEC allocated N2.5 billion for the procurement of satellite technology intended to monitor and regulate mining activities across Nigeria. Dele Alake, the Minister for Solid Minerals, stated that this satellite equipment would play a crucial role in identifying illegal mining operations and unregistered sites, which are significantly damaging the nation’s natural resources.
Minister Alake emphasized the need for effective management to prevent the further loss of wealth from unregulated mining practices. “We have lost trillions of naira to illegal exploitation of our solid minerals, and this technology will help prevent further devastation,” he remarked. He also addressed the challenges faced from state governments that have unlawfully closed mining fields, noting the conflict between state and federal rights over mineral resources.
Moreover, the 11 new private universities will be established in different states across Nigeria, as confirmed by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa. The institutions set for approval include:

2. University of Fortune, Igbotako, Ondo State
3. Eranova University, Mabushi, Osun State
4. Minaret University, Ikirun, Osun State
5. Abubakar Toyin University, Oke-Agba, Kwara State
6. Southern Atlantic University, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State
7. Lens University, Ilemona, Kwara State
8. Monarch University, Iyesi-Ota, Ogun State
9. Tonnie Iredia University of Communication, Benin City
10. Isaac Balami University of Aeronautics and Management, Lagos
11. Kevin Eze University, Mgbowo, Enugu State
