Pakistan’s Strong Opposition to Displacement of Palestinians at OIC Meeting

Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar will represent Pakistan at the OIC foreign ministers’ meeting in Jeddah, where he will denounce U.S. proposals to displace Palestinians from Gaza. The session aims to address the ongoing Israeli aggression and the humanitarian crisis in Palestine. Dar will advocate for Palestinian rights, affirming Pakistan’s support for a sovereign Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders with Al-Quds as its capital, while an Egyptian reconstruction plan seeks to avoid displacing Palestinians.

ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister of Pakistan, Ishaq Dar, is set to attend a special meeting of foreign ministers from OIC member states in Jeddah on Friday. He intends to denounce an “unacceptable” proposal aimed at displacing Palestinians from Gaza. This proposal has drawn significant criticism from the Muslim world, particularly in light of ongoing Palestinian fears of permanent displacement under U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan that seeks to assert U.S. control over Gaza and transform it into an international beachfront resort.

At the extraordinary session convened by the OIC, the agenda will focus on the serious deterioration of conditions in Palestine due to incessant Israeli aggression and violations of Palestinian rights. Ishaq Dar will reaffirm Pakistan’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, calling for the immediate withdrawal of Israel from all occupied territories, inclusive of Jerusalem. He will also express firm opposition to any proposals that advocate further displacement of Palestinians.

Furthermore, Dar is expected to advocate for the recognition of the “inalienable rights” of the Palestinian people, inclusive of their right to return to their homeland and the establishment of a viable Palestinian state based on the June 1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.

In response to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Arab leaders this week endorsed an Egyptian reconstruction plan costing $53 billion, which aims to avoid the displacement of Palestinians. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi emphasized the creation of an administrative committee consisting of independent Palestinian technocrats to oversee governance in Gaza during reconstruction efforts, following the Israel-Gaza conflict. This committee is to facilitate humanitarian aid and prepare for the restoration of the Palestinian Authority’s governance.

The recent conflict, which began with a Hamas attack on Israel resulting in significant casualties and hostages, has been met with a devastating Israeli military response, exacerbating humanitarian conditions in Gaza. The situation has culminated in substantial displacement of Gazans, sparking serious allegations of war crimes against Israel, which it has denied.

Hamas, the governing entity in Gaza since 2007, has stated its agreement to the proposal from Egypt regarding the administrative committee. Since 1967, the Palestinian territories, including Gaza and the West Bank, have remained occupied by Israel, with Pakistan maintaining a stance of non-recognition of Israel and advocating for an independent Palestinian state founded upon internationally recognized parameters with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.

In conclusion, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar’s participation at the OIC meeting underscores Pakistan’s firm commitment to Palestinian rights and sovereignty. The response to recent calls for displacement amidst the ongoing humanitarian crisis further highlights the urgency for international cooperation in addressing the plight of Palestinians. Pakistan’s determined stance epitomizes its support for a sovereign Palestinian state, reaffirming the importance of addressing the root causes of the conflict through diplomatic means.
