During the recent Diaspora Liberians Annual Return 2024 event, ALCOD representatives engaged with constitutional and human rights lawyers to refine their advocacy approach. Previously, ALCOD held discussions with the National Elections Commission (NEC) and lawmakers regarding the involvement of diaspora Liberians in the upcoming 2029 elections. These dialogues are essential for developing a framework for absentee voting based on Article 80 Section ‘C’ of the 1986 Constitution.
ALCOD has been advised to formally appeal to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. for the government’s stance on absentee voting. Counselor Tiawan Saye Gongloe, a constitutional lawyer, highlighted that understanding the government’s definitions of “constituency” and “absentee ballot” would aid ALCOD in formulating a definitive advocacy strategy. Without this clarity, challenges in promoting out-of-country voting could arise.
