Camrail Invests CFA12 Billion Annually in Cameroon’s Railway Network

Camrail reports an annual investment of CFA12 billion in Cameroon’s railway network and contributes CFA10 billion in taxes. These figures were presented at the Yaoundé Economic Meetings, where the company highlighted its vital role in facilitating trade and exports, especially from neighboring countries. AGL, Camrail’s parent company, also outlined its strategic priorities focused on efficiency, digitalization, and sustainability in logistics.

Cameroon Railways Company (Camrail), the exclusive railway operator in Cameroon, reported a significant annual investment of CFA12 billion directed towards the railway transport sector. Additionally, the company contributes approximately CFA10 billion in taxes yearly. These insights were disclosed during the Yaoundé Economic Meetings, which took place from February 26 to 27, 2025, and were organized by the Cameroon Employers’ Association (GICAM).

At the meetings, Alain Minoué, Camrail’s Commercial and Marketing Director, articulated the company’s essential contributions to the economy. He stated, “Beyond our mobility solutions, we help streamline port operations, enhance corridor competitiveness, and stabilize fuel prices. The railway also plays a crucial role in exporting large volumes of goods, including raw and processed timber, cotton fiber, sesame, and gum arabic—many of which come from Chad and the Central African Republic. These exports generate significant foreign exchange earnings.”

Camrail assumed control of Cameroon’s railway system in 1999 following the privatization of the former state-run entity, Regifercam. Originally a subsidiary of the French Bolloré Group, now known as Africa Global Logistics (AGL), Camrail is responsible for managing a 918-kilometer railway network that supports both passenger and freight services.

Mama Nsounchiat Fit, the Deputy Managing Director of AGL Cameroon, highlighted the event’s significance, noting, “Our participation in the Yaoundé Economic Meetings was a valuable opportunity to strengthen dialogue with stakeholders and reaffirm our commitment to modern, efficient, and sustainable logistics. AGL Cameroon remains dedicated to supporting infrastructure and strategic services that drive the country’s growth.”

AGL articulated three strategic priorities for its operations in Cameroon. First, enhancing trade flow efficiency by providing customized logistics solutions tailored to local and regional markets. Second, advancing the digitalization of logistics services to improve operational efficiency and boost the competitiveness of local enterprises. Lastly, there is a focus on developing sustainable logistics solutions that are compatible with Cameroon’s environmental objectives.

In summary, Camrail plays a pivotal role in enhancing the Cameroonian economy through substantial investments and contributions to the railway infrastructure. With its focus on logistics efficiency, digitalization, and sustainability, Camrail and Africa Global Logistics are dedicated to fostering growth and improving trade activities within the region. Their efforts are crucial for exporting key goods and stabilizing the economic landscape in Cameroon.
