Additionally, Camwater has observed a troubling increase in water meter theft, with over 10,000 reported cases across the nation in the past five years, and Douala leading with nearly 3,000 instances. Yaoundé and the West region also reported significant thefts, while the East region is relatively less affected.
Statistics reflect a dramatic surge in theft cases, with Douala witnessing an increase from 310 in 2018 to 927 in 2022 and Yaoundé from 44 to 1,316 in the same timeframe. The Littoral region has experienced a rise from no thefts in 2018 to 80 reported cases.
Camwater has identified copper components in stolen meters as the primary target, resulting in considerable water losses for customers who are compelled to purchase replacement meters, thereby straining their finances.
