GCC Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty Over Western Sahara

The GCC has reiterated its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity over Western Sahara during a ministerial meeting led by Secretary General Jassim Al Budaiwi. The council welcomed UN Resolution 2756, which extends the peacekeeping mandate and promotes Algeria’s involvement in the political process. Morocco’s initiatives and reforms have helped establish it as a central partner in the Gulf region.

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has reaffirmed its unwavering support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Morocco over its southern provinces in Western Sahara. Jassim Al Budaiwi, the Secretary General of the GCC, articulated this stance during a joint ministerial meeting, where Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita represented Morocco and emphasized the council’s commitment to these principles.

Additionally, the GCC expressed endorsement for the ongoing UN-led political process regarding Western Sahara, particularly highlighting the significance of UN Security Council Resolution 2756. This resolution, adopted in October of last year, extended the mandate of the UN peacekeeping operation MINURSO until October 2025 and urged Algeria’s involvement in achieving a mutually accepted solution to the conflict.

The resolution acknowledged the importance of prior roundtable discussions initiated by former UN Personal Envoy Horst Kohler and recognized Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as a credible approach to resolving the dispute over Western Sahara. Furthermore, the GCC acknowledged Morocco’s various initiatives, including the Atlantic initiative aimed at enhancing Sahel countries’ access to the Atlantic Ocean.

Other notable initiatives praised by the council include the Atlantic African States Process and the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project. The GCC lauded Morocco’s extensive reforms across multiple sectors, particularly in its economy, which helped position the nation as a key partner within the international community, especially among Gulf states.

Morocco has cultivated robust relationships with several Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar, leading to significant investments in areas like real estate, infrastructure, and healthcare.

In conclusion, the GCC’s steadfast support for Morocco’s territorial integrity underscores its commitment to regional stability and collaboration. The council’s endorsement of the UN-led process on Western Sahara and recognition of Morocco’s initiatives further solidify Morocco’s role as a vital partner in international relations, particularly in the Gulf region. Through various investments and collaborative efforts, Morocco continues to strengthen its ties with GCC member states, enhancing its diplomatic and economic stature.
