Jason and Meaghan Geroux, a couple from Orrington, are set to travel to Mustang, Nepal, to participate in an ultra marathon exceeding 100 miles. Both avid travelers and fitness enthusiasts, they have competed in multiple marathons across various countries, including Iceland and Ireland. Their recent focus has shifted to ultra marathons, which typically range from 26.2 miles to 100 miles or more.
“We both just fell in love with putting up these big numbers and were like ‘well that’s kinda cool, where’s the ceiling, how far can we push it'” – Jason Geroux. The couple maintains a rigorous training schedule throughout the year, regardless of weather conditions, to keep in shape and prepared for races.
“Pushing yourself further and longer is something you don’t think you can do until you do it,” said Meaghan Geroux. In merely a few weeks, they will face their challenging endeavor, competing alongside 50 international athletes in a 103-mile race traversing the Himalayas.
The Geroux couple, who became enchanted with the Himalayas during their 2019 trip to Everest Base Camp, recalls seeing an ultra marathon taking place during that visit and feeling inspired. “Maybe someday we’ll be that cool,” Jason mused. Six years later, they are pursuing that ambition and plan to conquer various distances over eight days, often sacrificing sleep to achieve their objectives. They describe this endeavor as demanding both physical and mental fortitude.
“Getting through the night-time hour is a really mental challenge, because you want to sleep; I think that’s the biggest challenge with ultras,” Meaghan explained. Neither is sponsored; they engage in these sports during their free time driven by their shared passion. Meaghan works as a dietician, whereas Jason is a contractor specializing in epoxy flooring and painting.
“I just want to try to rub off on the people that I’m around, to say ‘hey you can do this too, I’m just a regular guy,'” said Jason. They aspire to demonstrate that anyone is capable of taking on similarly demanding challenges. “It’s going to be fun, it’s going to be challenging, but I think it’s going to be a great accomplishment when we’re done and we’ll do it together,” concluded Meaghan.
In summary, Jason and Meaghan Geroux from Orrington are embarking on an international adventure to compete in a 103-mile ultra marathon in Nepal. Their journey from casual runners to ultra marathon enthusiasts highlights their dedication to fitness and mental resilience. As they tackle this formidable challenge, they hope to inspire others to pursue their own athletic ambitions, proving that commitment and passion can lead to remarkable achievements. The Geroux’s story exemplifies how determination can open new horizons in personal fitness.
