The SWAPO Party has officially endorsed Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah as the sole candidate for its presidency at the upcoming Extraordinary Congress, following an extraordinary meeting. This decision comes after the passing of Dr. Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma. Dr. Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasized the need to prepare for regional and local elections, insisting on effective resource management for all Namibians.
The SWAPO Party’s Central Committee has officially nominated H.E. Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, the party’s Vice President and President-elect of Namibia, as the sole candidate for the presidency at the upcoming Extraordinary Congress. This endorsement was revealed in a press release dated February 15, 2025, and signed by Hilmar Nicanor, the party’s Secretary for Information and Mobilization.
The decision to endorse Dr. Nandi-Ndaitwah followed an extraordinary meeting convened in Windhoek, which was prompted by the passing of Dr. Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma on February 8, 2025. During this meeting, the Central Committee reviewed a report from the Political Bureau relating to the preparations for the Extraordinary Congress, initially set for February 28 to March 1, 2025.
Following careful consideration, the Central Committee accepted the recommendation from the Political Bureau for Dr. Nandi-Ndaitwah to be elected unopposed, thereby filling the position left vacant by the late Dr. Hage G. Geingob. Dr. Nandi-Ndaitwah is scheduled to be presented during the extraordinary congress taking place from March 7 to 9, 2025.
In her address at the Central Committee meeting, Dr. Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasized the need for party members and supporters to diligently prepare for imminent regional and local elections. She highlighted the importance of electing capable, committed, and visionary councillors at both levels to ensure efficient service delivery.
Dr. Nandi-Ndaitwah also addressed the management of Namibia’s natural resources, asserting, “As party leaders and members, supporters and sympathisers, we must make sure Namibia’s resources are managed in a manner that will benefit all members of our society.” Her statements reflect the party’s dedication to equitable resource distribution in Namibia, insisting that resources should benefit the entire population rather than a privileged few.
