Following a historic announcement in October 2022, the UK agreed to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, which had been under UK control for over fifty years.
Under the proposed agreement negotiated with former Mauritian Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, the UK would relinquish sovereignty of the islands while maintaining a 99-year lease of the military airbase located on Diego Garcia, the largest island in the archipelago.
