Prime Minister Modi’s Diplomatic Visit to Strengthen India-Mauritius Ties

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Mauritius will include signing various MoUs related to trade and SMEs. He will inaugurate key projects, attend National Day celebrations, and meet with new leaders, reinforcing the strong ties between the two nations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a visit to Mauritius where multiple memorandums of understanding (MoUs) will be signed, focusing on trade and the promotion of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). He is scheduled to inaugurate both the Civil Service College and the Area Health Centre, which were constructed with Indian grant assistance.

During his visit, PM Modi will serve as the Chief Guest for the National Day celebrations in Mauritius on March 12. Additionally, a contingent of the Indian Defence Forces, along with a naval ship, will participate in these celebrations, reflecting the close military cooperation between the two nations.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri emphasized that Mauritius is a crucial partner for India in the Indian Ocean, dating back centuries of shared history and culture. The bilateral relationship is reinforced by a strong development partnership, with India serving as a significant development ally, involved in numerous economic and capacity-building initiatives in Mauritius.

Misri remarked on the increased strength of the India-Mauritius relationship over the past decade, which he termed a vital component of India’s Vision SAGAR, aimed at promoting security and growth in the region. He mentioned the new government in Mauritius led by Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, stating that PM Modi was the first world leader to congratulate him after the elections held in November 2024.

The visit aims at early engagement with the newly elected leadership of Mauritius, allowing both Prime Ministers to assess and guide future bilateral relations effectively. The visit is described as timely, coinciding with the fresh terms of both leaders. The Indian Air Force’s Aakash Ganga skydiving team is also set to participate in the National Day ceremonies.

Upon arrival in Port Louis on March 11, PM Modi plans to visit the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden to pay tribute to prominent Mauritian leaders. His agenda includes meetings with President Dharambeer Gokhool and Prime Minister Ramgoolam, along with other political leaders.

Additionally, PM Modi and Prime Minister Ramgoolam will inaugurate several projects initiated with Indian aid and witness the signing of various MoUs concerning capacity building, bilateral trade, addressing cross-border financial crimes, and promoting SMEs. Lastly, he is expected to engage with members of the Indian community and other socio-cultural organizations during his visit.

Overall, Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Mauritius underscores the importance of bilateral relations between India and Mauritius, centered on development and cooperation. The signing of MoUs and various inaugurations aim to strengthen ties in trade and capacity building, while interactions with local communities celebrate the enduring bonds forged through shared history and culture.
