Sadly, five of the victims drowned on roads where they had become trapped in their vehicles by rapidly rising waters. National Security Minister Patricia Bullrich described the city as “destroyed,” and local authorities have indicated that the death toll could rise further in this population of 350,000.
Local residents expressed frustration at officials for not arriving sooner to address the crisis. Some even confronted Minister Bullrich during her visit to the affected areas, demanding immediate assistance and expressing anger at the lack of timely action. Fortunately, no lives were reported lost at the hospital, with the medical staff expressing gratitude for their safety despite the chaos.
Emergency relief efforts are underway, with the government releasing 10 billion pesos (approximately $12.24 million) for reconstruction aid. While Bahia Blanca has faced similar weather-related disasters in the past, such as a deadly storm in December 2023, the recent deluge has caused extensive infrastructure damage and prompted warnings in surrounding areas, including nearby Mar del Plata.
