Syria’s transitional President Ahmad Al-Sharaa has formed an independent committee to investigate violence in the coastal region that resulted in significant casualties, particularly among the Alawite minority. The committee must report its findings within 30 days. Meanwhile, international powers demand accountability for these atrocities and call for an independent investigation.
On Sunday, Ahmad Al-Sharaa, the transitional President of Syria, announced the establishment of an independent national committee tasked with investigating the violent events that transpired on March 6 in the coastal region of Syria. This committee is expected to provide its findings to the presidency within 30 days of its formation.
The coastal area, predominantly inhabited by the Alawite minority, has experienced several days of severe violence. Government security forces have characterized the ongoing clashes as a confrontation with “remnants of the former regime,” which refers to armed groups opposing the new government.
Rami Abdel Rahman, the director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, reported that 745 Alawite civilians were killed on a “sectarian basis.” He emphasized that these victims were not engaged in combat nor affiliated with the regime, highlighting the grievous nature of the violence.
In response to the unfolding situation, the United States, Germany, and France have called for accountability regarding the alleged “massacres” against minorities in western Syria. They advocate for an independent investigation to address these crimes and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
The recent violent clashes in Syria’s coastal region have prompted the formation of an independent committee by President Ahmad Al-Sharaa to investigate the events. With significant casualties reported among the Alawite community, international calls for accountability underscore the urgency of addressing this humanitarian crisis. The findings of this committee may play a critical role in mitigating sectarian tensions and facilitating justice in the region.
