Accompanying him were former First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo and Minority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin. Danquah was a prominent Ghanaian statesman and lawyer who famously contested for presidency against Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in 1960 but was not successful.

In October 1961, J.B. Danquah was detained under the Preventive Detention Act due to accusations of planning to undermine the ruling Convention People’s Party and assassinate Dr. Nkrumah. He was released in 1962 and subsequently served as President of the Ghana Bar Association. However, he faced a second arrest in January 1964 without formal charges and spent time in Nsawam Medium Prison.

Danquah died in prison on February 4, 1965. After the National Liberation Council overthrew the Convention People’s Party in 1966, the state recognized his contributions by arranging a state burial for him. Meanwhile, a special edition of ‘People and Places’ is available, recounting the return of the head of Kwame Nkrumah’s bronze statue after 43 years.
