Cyclone Jude Impacts Nampula Coast of Mozambique, Leading to Cancellations and Risks

Tropical cyclone Jude made landfall in northern Mozambique, impacting Nacala. It is expected to weaken as it moves into Malawi. Significant rainfall and strong winds threaten local districts, with authorities estimating over 341,000 individuals at risk and school closures initiated. Power outages and canceled flights have also occurred due to the storm’s effects.

Tropical cyclone Jude made landfall along the northern coast of Mozambique on the evening of Sunday, impacting the port city of Nacala. As reported by the Joint Typhoon Warning Centre (JTWC), by mid-morning on Monday, the cyclone had moved approximately 100 kilometers inland, exhibiting wind speeds of 65 knots (120 kilometers per hour). The storm is projected to track westward and may reach Malawi by Tuesday afternoon, albeit with weakened winds below 35 knots.

Heavy rainfall is predicted for Nampula’s coastal districts, particularly in Nacala, Mossuril, Memba, Mozambique Island, and Monapo. Accumulated rainfall between 100 and 200 millimeters is anticipated within a 24-hour period. Rainfall had already commenced in Nampula province since Saturday night, raising concerns for local residents.

The National Disaster Management Institute (INGD) in Mozambique estimates that over 341,000 individuals are at significant risk due to the cyclone’s impact in the region. Consequently, the provincial education directorate has mandated the closure of all schools throughout Monday, prioritizing the safety of students and staff.

The cyclone has also caused substantial damage to the electrical infrastructure, leading to a power outage affecting approximately 40,000 customers of the public electricity company, EDM, as of Monday morning. In response to the storm, Mozambique Airlines (LAM) has canceled all domestic flights to northern cities, including Nampula, Nacala, and Pemba. LAM has assured affected passengers of rebooking options once the weather conditions improve and flights can resume.

In conclusion, Cyclone Jude has significantly impacted the Nampula region of Mozambique, leading to widespread disruptions, including school closures, power outages, and flight cancellations. The forecast indicates heavy rainfall and considerable risk to the local population, emphasizing the need for ongoing observation and timely disaster management responses to ensure public safety.
