Additionally, Dr. Boamah expressed pride in the appointment of Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey as the first African woman and Ghanaian to lead the Commonwealth as Secretary-General. He urged member states to support her as she guides the organization towards a new era upon her commencement next month.
The Defence Minister also acknowledged the Commonwealth’s contribution to Ghana’s electoral processes and indicated continued cooperation under President Mahama’s leadership. He expressed that Ghana would focus on sustainable development, climate action, and social progress in alignment with Commonwealth initiatives, including the Blue Charter and Climate Finance Access Hub.
British High Commissioner Harriet Thompson, representing His Majesty King Charles III, stated that the critical goal remains restoring the planet’s disrupted harmony for future generations. “The Commonwealth’s ability to unite people from all walks of life remains as important today as ever,” she affirmed.
In a message delivered by John Obeng Apea of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council, Secretary-General Patricia Scotland celebrated the enduring strength of the Commonwealth as a “living testament to the power of connection, friendship, and shared purpose.” She recognized the organization’s unique reach and the meaningful relationships fostered among its members.
Reflecting on her nine years in office, Baroness Scotland discussed the endeavors to modernize the Commonwealth for the benefit of its population of 2.7 billion, applauding the collaborative spirit among nations, especially during crises, and the innovation propelled by youth. As she prepares to leave office, she expressed satisfaction in the Commonwealth’s readiness to shape the future.
