The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has initiated an investigation involving former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, during which 32 individuals have been questioned. This money laundering inquiry has revealed over RM170 million in various currencies and gold kept in several safehouses. An anonymous source indicated that another 23 individuals will be summoned for statements, while four others are being recalled for further questioning.
Currently, the MACC has requested bank records from various financial institutions and is awaiting their provision. Ismail Sabri was initially scheduled to provide his statement again on March 5; however, he fell ill, prompting a reschedule to March 7, for which he later submitted a medical certificate extending his leave until March 12.
Due to these delays, the MACC has taken the additional step of interviewing Ismail Sabri’s doctor to evaluate the seriousness of his health issues. The former Prime Minister had previously undergone questioning for five hours at the MACC headquarters, focusing on significant funds utilized for promotional and publicity activities during his tenure from 2021 to 2022. Following this session, he was hospitalized due to high blood pressure after reportedly collapsing at home.
MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki has confirmed that Ismail Sabri is a suspect in this ongoing investigation and is required to disclose details regarding the assets he declared in February.
