The Turkish ambassador to Uganda, Fatih Ak, commemorated International Women’s Day by emphasizing the importance of hygiene products for women and girls in Uganda. During a recent event, Türkiye’s state aid agency, TIKA, donated equipment necessary for producing reusable sanitary pads. This initiative aims to facilitate economic independence among young women by improving their access to essential hygiene products.
The donated equipment, which includes sewing and overlock machines, was provided to Msichana Uganda, a non-profit organization focused on empowering girls and women. Ambassador Ak expressed his delight in supporting this significant project under TIKA, stating, “Development cooperation is a vital pillar of the strong and multifaceted relationship between our two countries, and we take great pride in our shared commitment to progress.”
TIKA has completed a remarkable 94 projects in Uganda since the early 2000s, significantly impacting various local communities. Ambassador Ak highlighted that Turkish NGOs have been continually involved in humanitarian and development efforts throughout Uganda. He remarked, “With this latest initiative, we are proud to support Msichana Uganda in its mission to improve the quality of life for women.”
Historically, Türkiye was among the first nations to grant women fundamental rights, including suffrage in 1934, ahead of several European countries. TIKA’s country coordinator, Murat Cetin, conveyed that the provided equipment would not only bolster hygiene standards but also create job opportunities for young women in Uganda.
Winnie Nakandi, director of Msichana Uganda, expressed gratitude to the Turkish people for their contributions, affirming the critical importance of empowering women for achieving justice and social prosperity. She stated, “We remain steadfast in our struggle to support underprivileged girls and women to access reusable pads and as well render their contributions visible across all sectors.”
Reusable sanitary pads serve as a cost-effective alternative to disposable products, which can often be too expensive for low-income earners, thereby highlighting the necessity of such initiatives in promoting hygiene and economic empowerment.
