Libya’s Justice Ministry has convened the Permanent Committee for Monitoring the Conditions and Issues of Libyan Prisoners Abroad for its inaugural meeting of the year. Chaired by Minister of Justice Halima Ibrahim, the focus was on assessing draft memorandums of understanding and prisoner exchange agreements with nations including China and Ethiopia.

According to reports from the Our Government platform, the committee examined the progress of negotiations with various countries. This follows a visit by the Ministry of Justice’s Deputy General to Lebanon, Egypt, Malta, Tunisia, and Turkey, aimed at enabling Libyan prisoners to complete their sentences in Libya.

Furthermore, the committee took steps to create a comprehensive database cataloguing all prisoners in countries where the Ministry of Justice has legal attachés. This database is intended to be expanded to encompass additional countries, also as reported by Our Government.

The Libyan Ministry of Justice is actively pursuing prisoner exchange agreements and monitoring the conditions of its citizens detained abroad. Recent discussions have focused on agreements with countries such as China and Ethiopia, with the aim of allowing prisoners to serve their sentences in Libya. The establishment of an extensive database on Libyan prisoners is also a critical step for better management of this issue.
