Modi Honors Mauritian PM with OCI Cards, Strengthens India-Mauritius Ties

Prime Minister Modi bestowed OCI cards on Mauritius PM Ramgoolam and his wife, extending benefits to the seventh generation of the Indian diaspora. Modi emphasized Mauritius’s familial ties with India and its importance in the global context, also announcing his role as the chief guest for the island’s national day celebrations.

On March 11, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards to Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam and his wife, Veena, reaffirming India’s commitment to the Indian diaspora in Mauritius. Modi announced that this initiative will extend OCI benefits to the seventh generation of the Mauritian Indian community.

PM Modi, recently honored with Mauritius’s highest civilian accolade, expressed his gratitude to the nation. He remarked, “I humbly accept this decision with great respect. This is not just an honour for me, it is an honour for the historic bond between India and Mauritius.”

He characterized Mauritius as a crucial link between India and the Global South, declaring it a part of India’s family rather than merely a partner. “Mauritius is like ‘Mini India,'” Modi articulated during a gathering of the Indian diaspora in Port Louis, attended by the Mauritian Prime Minister and cabinet ministers.

The Prime Minister emphasized the profound historical ties that exist between India and Mauritius. He remarked, “For us, Mauritius is family! This bond is deep and strongly rooted in history, heritage, and the human spirit.” He reiterated the importance of Mauritius in India’s SAGAR vision—Security and Growth for All in the Region, established in 2015. Modi stated, “Today, Mauritius is still at the heart of this vision.”

Following this event, Modi is set to participate in the national day celebrations of Mauritius as the chief guest on Wednesday.

In summary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s presentation of OCI cards to the Mauritian Prime Minister and his wife signifies India’s enduring commitment to its diaspora in Mauritius. Modi’s remarks encapsulated the deep historical ties and familial connection between India and Mauritius, highlighting the island’s role as a significant partner in regional growth and cooperation.
