Petrobras Confirms Major Gas Discovery at Sirius-2 Well in Colombia

Petrobras announced a significant gas discovery at the Sirius-2 well off Colombia’s coast, confirming good productivity and volumes exceeding six trillion cubic feet. This represents the largest gas find in Colombian history, potentially increasing the country’s gas reserves by 200%. The consortium will continue assessments and has entered strategic contracts with other companies.

Petrobras has completed a drill stem test (DST) at the Sirius-2 well, located approximately 31 kilometers off the Colombian coast, at a depth of 804 meters. The test focused on a 100-meter reservoir interval and confirmed remarkably “good productivity.” Situated in the GUA-OFF-0 offshore block, this well is 77 kilometers from Santa Marta, the capital of Colombia’s Magdalena department.

The DST involved collecting samples for laboratory analysis, which indicate a significant presence of gas in the region. In December 2024, Petrobras, through its subsidiary Petrobras International Braspetro – Sucursal Colombia, and Ecopetrol announced the gas discovery, revealing that the Sirius-2 well contains volumes exceeding six trillion cubic feet. This finding represents the largest gas discovery in Colombian history and could potentially enhance the nation’s gas reserves by 200%.

Initially named Uchuva-2, the Sirius-2 well is the second drilled in the locality, following the earlier Sirius-1 (formerly Uchuva-1). The consortium plans to continue assessing the drilling results of both wells, in compliance with commitments to Colombia’s Agencia Nacional de Hidrocarburos. Furthermore, in February 2025, Petrobras entered into a strategic term contract with Bharat Petroleum Corporation to supply Brazilian crude oil grades, while also establishing partnerships with ONGC Videsh and Oil India for oil and gas exploration opportunities.

In summary, Petrobras has made a historic gas discovery at the Sirius-2 well off the Colombian coast, confirming significant productivity and volumes that surpass six trillion cubic feet. This discovery has the potential to considerably augment Colombia’s gas reserves. The company continues to showcase its commitment through ongoing exploration and strategic partnerships.
