Prime Minister Modi’s State Visit to Mauritius: Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Mauritius for two days, focusing on agreements related to maritime security, financial crimes, and civil servant training. The visit celebrates the 57th National Day of Mauritius and aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation under the new government led by Prime Minister Ramgoolam.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a two-day State visit to Mauritius, commencing on Tuesday. He referred to Mauritius as “a close maritime neighbour” and a vital partner in the Indian Ocean. The agenda for the visit includes signing agreements on maritime security, combatting financial crimes, and providing training for civil servants from Mauritius.

During his visit, Prime Minister Modi is expected to participate in the 57th National Day celebrations of Mauritius at the invitation of Prime Minister Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam. The Prime Minister noted the historical, geographical, and cultural connections between India and Mauritius, emphasizing deep mutual trust and shared democratic values. He highlighted the importance of the people-to-people connections as a source of pride.

An Indian Naval Ship will make a port call at Port Louis, coinciding with Modi’s attendance at National Day celebrations. The celebration will feature a marching contingent from the Indian Navy, an Indian Navy helicopter, the Akash Ganga Skydiving Team, and NCC cadets, enhancing the ceremonial display.

According to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, this visit will establish early engagement between the leaders following Mauritius’ recent election of Prime Minister Ramgoolam. Modi was the first leader to congratulate Ramgoolam following his electoral victory. The visit aims to strengthen bilateral relations and set the framework for future cooperation.

Upon arrival, Modi will pay homage at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden and meet with the newly appointed President of Mauritius, Dharambeer Gokhool. This will be followed by bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Ramgoolam, where both leaders will inaugurate projects aided by India and sign several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) related to cooperative initiatives.

One of the significant agreements expected to be signed is a technical agreement on sharing maritime security information between the Indian Navy and Mauritius authorities, enhancing regional cooperation and maritime domain awareness. Additionally, there will be an MoU established between the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services and Mauritius, focusing on ocean observation and research.

On the front of financial crimes, a memorandum will be concluded between the Enforcement Directorate of India and the Financial Crimes Commission of Mauritius, aimed at mutual assistance in anti-corruption and anti-money laundering efforts. Furthermore, an agreement is anticipated with the Ministry of Public Service and Administrative Reforms of Mauritius for the training of 500 civil servants over five years, emphasizing leadership and technical skills development.

In summary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming State visit to Mauritius reflects the strengthening ties between the two nations. The visit will advance bilateral cooperation in maritime security, financial crime prevention, and civil service training, fostering deeper mutual relations and collaborative efforts for future development in the region. The significance of this partnership underlines the historical ties and shared values between India and Mauritius, promising a positive engagement for both nations.
