A supporter of the English football team Arsenal was reportedly killed by a security guard in Uganda during a celebration of Arsenal’s victory over Manchester United. The incident involved another fan who sustained injuries when the guard opened fire amidst a large gathering at a restaurant in Lukaya, approximately 100 kilometers from Kampala, following a match that ended 2-0 in favor of Arsenal on a Wednesday night.
Witnesses report that the restaurant manager became upset with the noise created by the fans and asked the guard to intervene. However, when the fans were not quiet, the situation escalated. Eyewitness Farish Magembe stated that the manager cut off the restaurant’s electricity, provoking the fans further, which led to the guard firing multiple shots.
The deceased, identified as 30-year-old John Ssenyonga, died on the spot. Another long-time Arsenal fan, Lawrence Mugejera, was taken to the hospital for treatment. The security guard and the restaurant manager are currently at large as police conduct an investigation, with local authorities urging anyone with information to come forward.
Twaha Kasirye, a police chief in the region, condemned the incident, stating that firearms were found at the scene. He encouraged fans to control their emotions and behavior during celebrations, reflecting a broader issue of violence associated with football rivalries, particularly involving English teams. Past incidents of fan violence, including stabbings and deaths related to football matches, have occurred in Uganda, highlighting ongoing concerns surrounding fan behavior during sporting events.
