Ugandan Forces Deployed to Juba Amid Rising Tensions in South Sudan

Ugandan special forces have been deployed to Juba, South Sudan, due to escalating tensions that threaten a fragile peace agreement. This action comes amid increased violence between factions allied to the country’s leaders. Ugandan officials emphasized their commitment to protect South Sudan’s territory, following a historical military involvement starting in 2013.

The Ugandan army chief announced the deployment of special forces to South Sudan’s capital, Juba, amidst escalating tensions that could jeopardize an existing peace agreement. This deployment follows increased clashes between factions loyal to the nation’s leaders, particularly in the northeast region, highlighting South Sudan’s ongoing political instability and insecurity.

Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Ugandan army chief and son of President Yoweri Museveni, stated, “As of 2 days ago, our Special Forces units entered Juba to secure it.” He further emphasized, “We shall protect the entire territory of South Sudan like it was our own.”

Ugandan army spokesperson Felix Kulayigye confirmed the troops were sent to secure the government, noting, “We had instructions to deploy and we deployed the troops there.” This troop movement marks Uganda’s renewed military involvement in South Sudan since its withdrawal in 2015 after supporting President Salva Kiir during a five-year civil conflict that began in 2013.

The delicate power-sharing agreement formed in 2018 between Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar has been placed in jeopardy due to recent violence in Upper Nile State. Allegations have surfaced that Kiir’s allies are accusing Machar’s forces of destabilizing the region, allegedly collaborating with the White Army, a group of armed youth from Machar’s ethnic Nuer community.

The rising tensions in the nation have prompted international alarm, with the United Nations Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan warning of an “alarming regression” in the country that undermines years of progress. The International Crisis Group has expressed its concerns, stating, “South Sudan is slipping rapidly toward full-blown war.”

The deployment of Ugandan special forces to Juba underscores the escalating tensions in South Sudan and the fragility of its peace agreements. With ongoing clashes and accusations between political factions, the situation remains troubling, prompting international concern regarding a potential return to conflict. Uganda’s involvement raises important implications for regional stability and the future of South Sudan’s governance.
