Eight allies of Riek Machar were released from detention, while Petroleum Minister Puot Kang Chol and others remain under custody amidst ongoing political tensions. Edmund Yakani emphasized the need for respect for human rights and peaceful resolution of political conflicts.
On a recent development, Puok Both Baluang, the Press Secretary for First Vice-President Riek Machar, confirmed the release of eight detainees who were arrested alongside Petroleum Minister Puot Kang Chol, amidst rising tensions in Nasir, Upper Nile State. Baluang conveyed this information to Radio Tamazuj, stating that eight out of the 21 individuals detained by the National Security Service agents have now been freed.
The individuals released include Nelson Malou Lueng Makeny, Kun Tut Gatluak, Peter Magong Degay, Koang Puok Thoat, and Biluny Puok Thoat, along with Buay Thichuong Buoy, Yien Dak Kuach, and Bidit Hoth Guandong. Despite this release, both Minister Puot Kang Chol and Gen. Duop Lam, the SPLA-IO Chief of General Staff, remain in custody. Baluang reiterated the SPLM-IO’s ongoing demand for their release, along with that of other detained members.
Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization, expressed support for the recent release but underscored the necessity of freeing the remaining detainees as well. He highlighted the crucial importance of adhering to the rule of law and respecting human rights amid the political tensions affecting the parties involved in the 2018 peace agreement.
In his statements, Yakani urged the leadership of the peace agreement parties, stressing that they must avoid resolving their political conflicts through violence, especially after the latest violent incidents in Nasir and the recent leadership changes in Western Equatoria State. He cautioned that neglecting their political responsibilities regarding the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS) could risk the agreement’s integrity.
Additionally, Yakani insisted that the presidency must proactively address potential political misunderstandings among peace partners to prevent escalation. In recent weeks, hostilities have increased between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and those under First Vice President Riek Machar’s command, following violent clashes between the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) and the White Army, a loosely organized youth militia in Nasir County.
In summary, while the release of eight individuals linked to Vice President Riek Machar marks a positive step, the ongoing detention of key figures including the Petroleum Minister highlights persisting political tensions. The call for the release of these detainees underscores the need for upholding human rights and the rule of law in South Sudan. Edmund Yakani’s remarks stress the significance of non-violent political resolutions to maintain stability and protect the peace agreement.
