Robeson Benn, the Minister of Home Affairs, has issued a warning regarding potential treason charges for individuals appointed by Venezuela to govern the Essequibo region, highlighting concerns over Venezuelan secret agents operating within Guyana. During a recent Police conference, Benn elucidated that any support for Venezuela’s electoral appointments will not be tolerated.
Benn stated that authorities are vigilant and aware of the presence of Venezuelan “sleepers” within the country, asserting, “We know that there are some sleepers here; we’ve put out a few already.” He emphasized that anyone, whether a Guyanese citizen or foreign national, who accepts an appointed position following these elections would face serious legal repercussions.
He remarked, “If it’s a Guyanese who is appointed to be Governor of Essequibo and be placed at Anna Regina – we will charge that person for treason and lock them up.” Benn made it clear that this applies universally, indicating, “They are going to be charged for treason and anybody who is supporting them will also be charged.”
In light of Venezuela’s plans to hold elections on May 25, coinciding with Guyana’s 59th independence celebrations, Guyana has filed a request for provisional measures at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
