The official opening of the Dr Hifikepunye Pohamba Freeway was celebrated by President Nangolo Mbumba in Walvis Bay on March 7, 2025. He expressed pride in the occasion, noting that this freeway, known as MR 44, exemplifies Namibia’s commitment to prosperity. This road is part of a broader initiative to enhance the nation’s infrastructure, reflecting the vision of its three founding fathers: Sam Nujoma, Hifikepunye Pohamba, and Hage Geingob, the country’s first three presidents.

President Mbumba also highlighted the contributions of former President Pohamba in shaping Namibia’s democratic fabric and fostering peace, stability, and economic progression during his presidency. The freeway, which stretches 42 kilometers, connects the coastal towns of Walvis Bay and Swakopmund, signifying a significant improvement in the national road network.

The development of the road facilitates crucial transport corridors for trade, strengthening Namibia’s economic ties within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. The project, aimed at establishing Namibia as a logistics hub, not only improves infrastructure but also supports job creation, having involved 40 local suppliers and 11 SME subcontractors, creating approximately 650 jobs.

Phase 2 of the freeway construction will establish a dual carriageway from Main Road 44 to the Walvis Bay traffic circle, expected to be completed by mid-2025. Additionally, there are plans to upgrade Main Road 54 to a dual carriageway starting in April 2026. The Roads Authority, UNIK/Thohi Joint Venture, and SMEC Namibia were commended for their contributions to the project’s oversight and execution.

In summary, the Dr Hifikepunye Pohamba Freeway signifies a crucial step towards economic development and regional cooperation. It embodies the vision of the country’s founding leaders, ensuring the benefits of improved infrastructure are realized in job creation and business opportunities. President Mbumba concluded the ceremony by officially declaring the freeway open, urging continued collaboration for a prosperous Namibia.

The inauguration of the Dr Hifikepunye Pohamba Freeway highlights Namibia’s commitment to enhancing its infrastructure and promoting economic growth. This strategic development not only improves connectivity between key coastal towns but also facilitates regional trade and fosters job creation. As we reflect on the contributions of past leaders, let us continue working together towards a peaceful, connected, and prosperous Namibia.
