Halimah Nakaayi is set to represent Uganda at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Nanjing. She is the only Ugandan athlete to qualify, specifically for the women’s 800m race. The Uganda Athletics Federation noted that poor performances in Europe affected other athletes’ qualifications. At 30, Nakaayi is a record holder and a former gold medalist from the 2019 World Championships.
Halimah Nakaayi will proudly represent Uganda as the only athlete at the upcoming World Indoor Athletics Championships scheduled for March 21-23 in Nanjing, China. The confirmation was made by Dominic Otuchet, the President of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF), highlighting that Nakaayi is the sole qualifier for the women’s 800m race.
Otuchet expressed disappointment regarding the overall performance of other prospective athletes, stating that various factors, including unfavorable cold conditions during competitions in Europe, hindered their chances to qualify. Nakaayi, aged 30 and a graduate in Computer Science and Technology, holds the national record for the women’s 800m and previously secured a gold medal in the same event at the 2019 World Championships held in Doha, Qatar.
In conclusion, Halimah Nakaayi’s qualification for the World Indoor Championships emphasizes her exceptional talent as Uganda’s leading athlete. Despite other athletes’ failures to qualify due to adverse conditions, Nakaayi’s achievements at the national level and her impressive educational background underscore her as a significant representative for her country. Her participation in Nanjing will be an important opportunity for her and for Ugandan athletics.
