The Ministry of Communications in Iraq signed a contract with Qatari Ooredoo Group for the FIG submarine cable, aiming to enhance internet capacity and state revenues. The project, expected to complete by 2027, will connect Iraq to Europe and the Gulf. On Thursday, the Ministry of Communications in Iraq signed a contract with the Qatari Ooredoo Group to land the FIG submarine cable. Minister Hiyam Al-Yasiri emphasized that this initiative aims to enhance state revenues and advance Iraq’s telecommunications infrastructure. The General Company for Communications and Information, a part of the Ministry, will oversee the installation of the fourth submarine cable in Iraq.
The cable will stretch over 2,000 kilometers with 24 pairs of optical fibers, significantly increasing internet capacity by more than 700 terabytes. Notably, it will link Iraq to Europe through Turkey and connect Gulf countries to the global telecommunications network. The completion of this project is anticipated by 2027.
Minister Al-Yasiri described this contract as a critical step in a series of strategic agreements aimed at establishing Iraq as a key regional hub connecting the Gulf, Asia, and Europe. This development will promote security, economic stability, and attract international companies that wish to utilize Iraq’s geographical advantages for telecommunications.
Nasser bin Hamad Nasser Al Thani, CEO of Ooredoo Group, expressed pride in the partnership, highlighting the company’s commitment to enhancing its services in the Iraqi market. He explained that Ooredoo has established long-term investments in the country and is optimistic about future projects that align with global trends in telecommunications and digital infrastructure. Moreover, the partnership will involve collaborations with renowned companies like Microsoft and Google.
Al Thani further noted that enhancing Iraq’s telecommunications sector will provide advanced services, including data centers and innovative solutions, benefiting users with improved quality and speed of service.
