In his remarks at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, Modi stated, “In the context of Chagos, we fully respect the sovereignty of Mauritius.” He further underscored the shared goal of ensuring a “free, open, secure, and safe Indian Ocean,” particularly in light of China’s growing influence in the region. Both leaders discussed enhancing cooperation through platforms like the Colombo Security Conclave, Indian Ocean Rim Association, and Indian Ocean Conference.
Following a two-day state visit, PM Modi returned to Delhi on Thursday. He highlighted India’s pride in being a trusted developmental partner for Mauritius and confirmed collaboration in supporting the Global South. Modi participated in Mauritius’ National Day celebrations on March 12, 2025, marking his second occasion as chief guest, the first being in 2015.
In a notable gesture, Modi was awarded the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean, becoming the first Indian to receive such an honor. This visit also aligns with former President Trump’s endorsement of a potential agreement between Mauritius and Britain regarding the future of the Chagos Archipelago and the US-British military base there. Diego Garcia, the largest island in the archipelago, has served as a joint military base since the 1970s.
