The region’s current unrest is primarily attributed to internal power struggles between Getachew Reda and Debretsion Gebremichael, leaders of opposing factions within the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
As the situation develops, residents express concern for their safety. Solomon Hagos, a university lecturer, reported: “People are in terror that if armed conflict breaks out, it will be worse than the war they endured.” Many individuals are attempting to flee the region, with Mihret, a concerned resident, stating the urgency for escape and disclosing that all flights from Mekele are fully booked.
Debretsion’s faction recently regained control of Mekele’s town hall and local radio station to reinstall the previous mayor amidst accusations of illegal dismissal by Getachew. This escalation of hostilities in Adigrat, Tigray’s second-largest town, further heightens fears, including potential civil war among Tigrayans.
Tensions are exacerbating with the looming threat of involvement from Eritrea, a country with a history of conflict with Ethiopia. Following the end of the Tigray conflict in 2022, relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea have deteriorated, raising concerns over a revival of hostilities. General Tsadkan Gebretensae warned that “a war between Ethiopia and Eritrea could break out at any moment.”
The atmosphere in Mekele is tense; residents are withdrawing money from banks and hoarding supplies amid fears of inflation and service disruptions. Hagos emphasized, “Our people are exhausted. Our economy is devastated,” highlighting the dire impact of ongoing political turmoil on everyday life in Tigray.
