Dwumfour highlighted the ongoing threat posed by illegal mining, indicating that such activities have severely damaged forest reserves, water bodies, and agricultural lands. He pointed out that law and order within mining communities have deteriorated due to rampant impunity, leading to human rights abuses and unlawful land seizures despite ineffective intervention from governmental and traditional leadership.
While acknowledging the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources for its recent initiatives against illegal mining and its support for journalists, he urged for sustained efforts to eradicate galamsey. Dwumfour remarked, “The GJA commends the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources… We, however, entreat the Ministry not to relent in its efforts to end galamsey.”
The GJA President expressed support for President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to eradicate illegal mining, stating, “We welcome the assurances and commitment of President Mahama … Mr. President, the time to act is NOW!!!” He conveyed the organization’s full readiness to back the government in this initiative.
Furthermore, Dwumfour emphasized the importance of March as Ghana’s National Heritage Month, calling upon media professionals to utilize their platforms for the promotion and preservation of the country’s cultural identity. He urged, “Through our various platforms, let us use the power of the media… It is our duty to promote our heritage.”
