This meeting occurred shortly after Iran dismissed U.S. demands to re-engage in negotiations regarding their nuclear program, which the U.S. had threatened.
In 2015, Iran established an agreement with the U.S. and several other countries to limit its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of sanctions. However, in 2018, President Donald Trump unilaterally exited the agreement, a move deemed illegal by many experts.
Last week, Trump communicated with Iranian officials, proposing renewed talks. Yet, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian firmly stated that Iran would not entertain negotiations under threat and would not yield to U.S. demands.
In response to Trump’s overtures, Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei remarked on Wednesday evening that such moves are merely tactics to manipulate public opinion. He expressed skepticism about negotiating with a party known for breaching agreements and emphasized that trust is essential in negotiations.
Ayatollah Khamenei stated, “From the very beginning, our objective in negotiations has been the removal of sanctions,” noting their diminishing impact over time as Iran develops strategies to navigate around them. He added that some in the U.S. believe prolonging sanctions will lessen their effectiveness, yet they have failed to recognize Iran’s capacity for adaptation.
Addressing U.S. claims regarding Iran’s intentions concerning nuclear weapons, Khamenei asserted, “If we had wanted to build nuclear weapons, the United States would not have been able to stop us.” He clarified that Iran does not seek nuclear weapons, emphasizing their commitment to peaceful pursuits rather than military ambitions.
