The Senator expressed appreciation to the Kenyan diplomatic mission in Luanda for their assistance, yet criticized Angolan authorities for the detention of over 20 leaders from various nations.
Among those detained are nine individuals from Tanzania, five from Botswana, and three from Lesotho. Furthermore, two Malawians, one eSwatini national, one German, two citizens from the UK, and two South Africans are also imprisoned. Senator Sifuna emphasized the importance of their immediate release, stating, “Such a shame that visitors can be treated like this in an African country when Angola chairs the African Union.”
Earlier on Thursday, Sifuna disclosed that authorities in Angola had blocked him and other politicians and activists from several countries from entering upon their arrival at Luanda’s 4 de Fevereiro International Airport. The group’s visit was organized by UNITA’s President, Adalberto Costa Júnior.
Despite the blockade, Senator Sifuna shared a letter confirming that a formal request for border visas had been submitted to Angola’s Migration and Foreign Services by UNITA’s presidential office. The letter, signed by Chief of Staff Lucas Tomás Nhanyula, assured that UNITA would oversee the visitors’ accommodations during their anticipated stay.
