Wärtsilä Engines Selected for Environmental Upgrades in Paraguayan Pusher Tugs

Wärtsilä is providing replacement engines for two pusher tugs in Paraguay. The selected vessels, owned by ADM Naviera Chaco S.R.L., will each receive three Wärtsilä 20 engines, enhancing efficiency and reducing emissions. This aligns with ADM’s goal of reducing emissions by 25% by 2035, supported by Wärtsilä’s commitment to sustainable practices.

Wärtsilä has been contracted to provide replacement engines for two inland waterway pusher tugs operating in Paraguayan rivers, owned by ADM Naviera Chaco S.R.L., a subsidiary of the agribusiness leader Archer-Daniels-Midland Company. The modifications and installation of new engines will occur in Asuncion, Paraguay.

The two vessels involved in this project are the Decatur Lady and the Tendota. Both tugs will be outfitted with three Wärtsilä 20 engines each. The engines were delivered earlier this year to the shipyard. The Wärtsilä 20 is recognized for its compactness, lightweight characteristics, and performance efficiency.

The new Wärtsilä engines are expected to reduce environmental impacts and enhance the operational efficiency of the pusher tugs. ADM has set a target to decrease emissions by 25% by 2035, with Wärtsilä’s advanced engine technology being instrumental in achieving this goal in South America.

Raul Valdez, logistics director at ADM Naviera Chaco S.R.L., stated, “The Wärtsilä engines selected for this project have the fuel flexibility that we seek, especially as we look to the potential of alternative future fuels. At the same time, the project will help us to improve operational reliability and lower our maintenance costs.”

Hanno Schoonman, director of sales for AMER region at Wärtsilä Marine, expressed enthusiasm about the project: “We are delighted that Wärtsilä engines have been selected for this important project, which highlights the marine industry’s shift to greater sustainability and increased efficiency. ADM’s vision to be the provider of choice to meet the demand for low-carbon intensity feedstocks is very much in line with Wärtsilä’s own commitment to supporting the industry’s decarbonization efforts.”
