This appeal was made during their First Plenary Assembly held from March 8 to 14 in Abuja, where they emphasized the necessity for improved intelligence gathering to combat the escalating security challenges in Nigeria.
The Bishops urged all levels of government to adopt high technology methods for effective intelligence management. They stressed the significance of adequate remuneration for security personnel, which would serve to motivate and equip them better in their duties. Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, chairman of the CBCN, underscored the necessity for a thorough commitment to prosecuting crime impartially.
In addition to technological advancements, the Bishops highlighted the need for the government to continually foster job creation. They advocated for increased investments in agriculture, stressing that with enhanced security, youth involvement in farming could boost food production, thereby stabilizing food costs in Nigeria.
The communiqué also called for collective efforts towards unity and national integration. The Bishops referenced existing challenges, such as the closure of schools during Ramadan in certain states, urging governments to reverse these decisions to uphold children’s right to education and respect Nigeria’s multi-religious context.
Moreover, the Bishops encouraged citizens to move past the disappointments caused by the 2023 elections. They urged an active participation in future electoral processes and called for reforms to strengthen electoral laws and ensure accountability among state institutions like the Independent National Electoral Commission.
While voicing their concerns, the Bishops acknowledged the government’s recent initiatives, including improvements in the petroleum sector, road rehabilitation projects, introduction of student loans, the new minimum wage, a reduction in the debt-service ratio, and proposals for a revised tax regime, deeming these as steps in a positive direction for Nigeria’s development.
